Dear Chief Kottke,
I have an application on my desk from a former employee of the Marengo Police Department.
Mr. Scott Crawford put down on his application that he worked in your department for around two years and left on favorable terms.
His qualifications are impressive, and he seems to be someone who would be a good fit in our department.
We have a small, professional staff and expect our officers to wear many hats. It might sound corny, but we view our friendly police personnel as public-relations specialists.
On his application, Mr. Crawford lists community relations as a strength.
There is one concern with Mr. Crawford's work history that we hoped you could help us with. The mayor found an article on the Internet about some trouble Mr. Crawford had in Marengo and Waukegan.
When I spoke to Mr. Crawford briefly, he said that if it were true, then how could he have gotten references from both agencies.
This sounds like a reasonable explanation to me.
Regards,
HR

Dear Chief,
Got your response and wondered whether you could be more specific on Mr. Crawford's job performance. Was he a team player? He's on our short list.
Regards,
HR
